For mobile mechanics

Under a car is not a place you answer the phone.

Your callers are usually stuck. Stuck people ring the next number within about a minute.

01 The moment

Why mobile mechanics miss calls

Not because you are careless with the phone. Because of where your hands are.

You are under a Hilux in a driveway in the rain with a sump plug half out. The phone is in the van. Whoever just rang is standing next to a car that will not start, and they are already looking at the next result.

02 What they get

The text that goes out

Within seconds of the call dropping, in your words, with your name on it.

Your business

It’s Rob from Rob’s Mobile Mechanical — I’m under a car and can’t answer. Text me the make, model and year, what it’s doing, and the suburb. If it won’t start at all, say so and I’ll ring you first.

The caller, a minute later

2015 Mazda 3, won’t turn over, just clicks. Parked at home in Croydon. Need it going for work tomorrow.

That reply is the job written down. You ring back knowing what it is, where it is and whether it is worth stopping for.

03 What changes

What it changes for mobile mechanics

  • 01

Make, model and symptom before you ring back

The first three questions of every call you make are the same. Asking them in the text means when you do ring, you already know if you have the part and whether the job is worth the drive.

  • 02

You find out where the car actually is

Driveway, work car park, side of the M1 — that changes whether you can do the job at all. Better to know before you commit than halfway through a callback.

  • 03

    Photos and noises

They can send a photo of the warning light, the leak under the car, or a video of the noise. Diagnosing badly-described symptoms over the phone wastes more of your day than anything else.

04 Questions

What mobile mechanics ask

The questions that come up on the phone, answered the way we'd answer them there.

Breakdowns are urgent. Doesn’t a text feel like a brush-off?

A text in five seconds does not read as a brush-off. Silence for two hours does. The message says you’re under a car, which every driver understands, and it asks them for the detail that gets them helped faster.

I get a lot of price-shoppers.

You do, and they cost you the most time on the phone. Getting them in text form means you can answer three of them in the time one call takes, and ignore the ones that are clearly not your work.

Can it tell them my call-out area?

Yes. Putting your radius in the message saves you the callbacks from an hour away that were never going to happen.

I also do roadside work at night.

You can run a separate after-hours message that says what you’ll come out for and what the call-out is. That way the 1am calls you do want get answered and the ones you don’t get handled without waking you.

See what you’re missing before you pay anything.

The audit counts the calls to your business that went unanswered last month, from your own records. It costs nothing and nothing changes on your line.
