For painters

A brush in one hand and a ladder in the other.

Painting quotes go to whoever turns up first, and turning up first starts with replying first.

01 The moment

Why painters miss calls

Not because you are careless with the phone. Because of where your hands are.

You are cutting in a ceiling line at the top of a ladder. Stopping means putting the brush down, coming down, and losing the line you were halfway through. So you don’t, and the caller books someone else’s quote for Saturday.

02 What they get

The text that goes out

Within seconds of the call dropping, in your words, with your name on it.

Your business

It’s Pete from Pete Nolan Painting — up a ladder, can’t grab the phone. Text me the suburb, what needs painting (inside, outside, or both) and roughly how many rooms, and I’ll get back to you tonight to book a look.

The caller, a minute later

Whole inside of a 3 bedroom house, we’re moving in next month. Bentleigh. Want a quote asap.

That reply is the job written down. You ring back knowing what it is, where it is and whether it is worth stopping for.

03 What changes

What it changes for painters

  • 01

First to reply is usually first to quote

Homeowners ring three painters and book the quotes in the order the painters get back to them. That order is set in the first hour, usually while you are still on the tools.

  • 02

You know what you’re driving to

Interior or exterior, one room or a whole house, occupied or empty. That is the difference between a quote worth an hour of your evening and one that is not.

  • 03

    Photos save the wasted look

Peeling weatherboards, a rendered wall, a stairwell you would need a scaffold for. Seeing it before you drive out stops the quotes you would have walked away from anyway.

04 Questions

What painters ask

The questions that come up on the phone, answered the way we'd answer them there.

Won’t people just want a price over text?

Some will ask, and you answer the way you would on the phone — that you need to see it. The difference is you are having that conversation at all, instead of never hearing from them.

Most of my work is repeats and referrals.

Referrals are exactly the calls you cannot afford to drop. Someone ringing on a recommendation who gets nothing back will tell the person who referred you, and that costs you more than the one job.

Can I use it just in the busy months?

You can start and stop whenever — there is no contract. Most people leave it on, because the quiet months are when every enquiry matters more.

Does it work with a landline?

It works on the number you give people, mobile or landline. The reply goes to the caller’s mobile, so they get a text even if they rang your office line.

See what you’re missing before you pay anything.

The audit counts the calls to your business that went unanswered last month, from your own records. It costs nothing and nothing changes on your line.
